Question 1

What is a trilogy engagement ring?

Accepted Answer

A trilogy engagement ring, also known as a three stone engagement ring, features a centre diamond flanked by two side stones. The three stones are said to represent the past, present, and future of a relationship, making it one of the most meaningful engagement ring styles in fine jewellery. For a deeper look at the style, read our guide to trilogy engagement rings.

Question 2

What is the difference between a trilogy ring and a solitaire?

Accepted Answer

A solitaire features a single centre stone on a plain or diamond band. A trilogy ring adds two side stones, framing the centre diamond and adding width, volume, and additional sparkle to the overall design.

Question 3

What are the best diamond shapes for a trilogy engagement ring?

Accepted Answer

Round brilliant diamonds are the most popular choice for their symmetry and light return. Pear diamonds and tapered baguettes work beautifully as side stones, sitting flush against the band and complementing a variety of centre stone shapes. Emerald, oval, and cushion cuts are also popular choices for both centre and side stones. If you're still exploring which shape is right for you, our friendly guide to diamond shapes is a good place to start.

Question 4

How should the side stones be proportioned relative to the centre stone?

Accepted Answer

The traditional guideline is for each side stone to sit at around half the carat weight of the centre diamond, creating a natural graduation. However, this is entirely a matter of personal preference: closer in size creates a bolder, more uniform look, while a larger difference in size draws more focus to the centre stone.

Question 5

Do the side stones need to match each other?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For the ring to look its best, the two side stones should be as closely matched as possible in cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. At Harmony Jewels, our gemmologists source and match side stones carefully so the finished ring has a coherent, balanced appearance.

Question 6

Can I mix diamond shapes in a trilogy ring?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Mixing shapes, for example, a round brilliant centre with pear-shaped side stones, or an emerald cut center with baguette sides, is a popular and elegant approach. Our consultants can advise on which combinations work best together.

Question 7

Can the side stones be gemstones rather than diamonds?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are all popular choices for trilogy side stones, offering a contrast of colour alongside a diamond centre stone. We source gemstones to the same quality standards as our diamonds.

Question 8

What metals are available for trilogy engagement rings at Harmony Jewels?

Accepted Answer

We craft trilogy rings in platinum and white gold, yellow gold and rose gold Each metal has distinct practical and aesthetic qualities, and our consultants will help you choose based on your lifestyle and personal style.

Question 9

Are trilogy engagement rings suitable for everyday wear?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when properly made. At Harmony Jewels, our in-house goldsmiths use secure, durable setting techniques and we recommend periodic check-ups to ensure all stones remain perfectly set over time.

Question 10

How does the design process work for a bespoke trilogy ring?

Accepted Answer

It begins with an appointment at our Hatton Garden studio. Our gemmologists prepare a curated selection of centre stones based on your preferences, and once your centre diamond is chosen, we move on to sourcing the side stones. Every detail; metal type, setting style, band profile, is decided together, and the ring is made entirely in our workshop. Book an appointment to get started.

Question 11

How long does it take to make a trilogy engagement ring?

Accepted Answer

Most bespoke trilogy rings are completed within four to six weeks from the point of finalising the design. We'll confirm your timeline at your consultation.

Question 12

Can a trilogy ring be resized?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. However, rings with diamonds set all the way around the band can be more complex to resize. We'll advise you on this during the design process and ensure your ring is made to the correct size from the outset.

Question 13

Can I pair a trilogy engagement ring with a wedding band?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it's worth thinking about both rings together from the start. We recommend designing your wedding band alongside your engagement ring so that the two sit flush without any gaps. For styling inspiration, take a look at our guide to how to pair your trilogy engagement ring.

Question 14

Is a trilogy ring a good choice for an engagement ring?

Accepted Answer

A trilogy ring is one of the most enduringly popular engagement ring styles for good reason: it combines meaningful symbolism with genuine design flexibility. Whether you prefer a classic, understated look or something more bold and geometric, the three-stone format accommodates a wide range of tastes and budgets.

Question 15

Where can I try on trilogy engagement rings in person?

Accepted Answer

At our Hatton Garden studio in London. Book an appointment to view our collection, explore bespoke options, and work with our design consultants to create a ring that's entirely your own.
